Background

Dubai Mall is the largest mall in the world by total area. It is the 21st largest shopping mall in the world by gross leasable area.

This 20-billion-dollar Downtown complex includes 1,200 shops and 160 food outlets. In 2011 it was the most visited building on the planet.

The massive expansion of The Dubai Mall, will welcome over 100 million annual visitors to the mall and will extend the existing mall by around 275,000 m2.

Slot Drain Duo was specified by Cracknell as it met the client’s criteria for aesthetics and functionality. The product has been installed in a high foot traffic area overlooking the Dubai Fountain and in the shadows of the Burj Khalifa.

Challenge

To provide a site-specific drain solution suitable for exterior spaces and worthy of the quality demanded by the client and within budget.

Approach

Working closely with Pearl Gardens Landscaping, Marshalls Drainage Design Team provided a full drainage design to assess the suitability of the product. The design also included a number of drawings that aided the installation of the system.

The design featured a number of bespoke radial sections to emulate the curves in the paving. Given the shallow falls on the paved areas, in-built fall channels were used to improve the available capacity and increase velocities within the channel to minimise maintenance requirements.

Result

A stunning aesthetic, combined with manufacturing excellence, have delivered a unique product that perfectly meets the technical demands of both the brief and the challenging environment.
