Challenges
The development of the Galleons Reach Retail Park formed part of the comprehensive regeneration programme for Greenwich Peninsula. The regeneration ‘Masterplan’ designed by Terry Farrell and Partners was designed to provide a mixed-use area of retail, housing, education and leisure facilities.
The regeneration programme had the following objectives:
- To create a vibrant new urban community with high-quality public spaces and parkland
- To provide a world-class entertainment and sporting destination
- To attract long-term jobs to the peninsula
The retail provision at Galleons Reach aimed to provide local facilities for those who live and work on the Peninsula as well as for people visiting the Arena. As well as looking at the design of the buildings themselves, it was decided right from the start that in order to achieve the project’s objectives, the design and integration of the external environment would have a key role to play. Open spaces and corridors had to be equally vibrant and aesthetically pleasing, so a paving and street furniture solution was required to provide a stylish pedestrian environment outside the retail centre.
Solutions
Marshalls’ Perfecta provided the ideal paving solution for the external pedestrian area, complementing the retail centre cladding and creating the link between the internal/external environments.
A stylish, yet unimposing, design makes the chosen paving ideal for locations of high architectural, or historical importance in this case, perfectly suited to the world-class destination that was planned. In all, Marshalls supplied 9,000 m2 of Perfecta paving, 600 bollards and street furniture including litter bins and cycle arch guards.
Benefits
Marshalls' involvement in the project went far beyond simply offering a comprehensive product range. To ensure the highest quality results were achieved and the maximum potential of the products realised, Marshalls also provided a specialist project management service for the development. By working with the contractors on site, Marshalls made sure there was effective scheduling of product delivery and that suitable laying techniques were used at all times.
Greenwich now benefits from high quality open spaces, car-free streets and pedestrian-only areas within a vibrant new community where people enjoy living, working and visiting.
