Project Brief
The £250m regeneration of the Southwater area in Telford Town Park is a prestigious civil engineering project to transform the area for public use and create a true heart of the new town.
The development, first proposed over a decade ago, sits between Telford Town Centre shopping complex and Telford town park.
The project includes a new library, a coffee shop, an 11-screen IMAX cinema, bars, 10 restaurants and Telford and Wrekin Council's main advice centre.
Dubbed as Telford's "flagship community building" by the local authority, it also houses a lake and public spaces.
Part of the work required is a retaining wall to secure the Southwater development for the parkland adjoining to it.
Marshalls Civils & Drainage Solution
Although the client had specified another retaining wall solution, it could not be used due to site constraints, having worked together before, McPhillips asked Marshalls to design a wall based on our Redi-Rock™ modular walling system.
Despite some initial hesitancy from the client, the Redi-Rock™ retaining wall has proven to be fit for purpose and the design was ultimately approved and the wall built.
Clients Comments
Roger Cox, Purchasing Manager for McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd said “Redi-Rock walling was the ideal choice for the project due to a number of factors including speed of build and reduced excavations and backfill requirements. The retaining wall system can be laid in all weathers which is ideal and the finished wall looks great and requires the minimal maintenance so the wall will look as good in twenty years as it does today.”
McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd believe using the best materials for the job has contributed in them being nominated as a Finalist in the Best Community Building category at the Local Authority Building Control Awards.
