Background
Royal Arsenal Riverside is an ambitious and well-connected development in South East London. Situated right on the edge of the river, the development has revitalised the Woolwich area with its combination of retail, leisure, and prestigious residential space.
Challenge
Marshalls was approached to assist with the design of the shared courtyard space, which features both a busy Tesco Metro and the development’s only pub. Berkeley aimed to use prestigious natural stone in plank sizes to create a visually impressive entrance to the development but wanted to make the design and build as efficient as possible.
Solution
Marshalls Design and Engineering Team utilised ground condition and loading predictions data, to create a bespoke sub-base design. This design was shallower than the British Standard, providing Berkeley with considerable savings in terms of dig out, muck away, sub-base material, carbon, and money. These savings ensured that Berkeley’s landscape designers could afford the best natural stone paving products to complete their vision.
Outcome
The smart structural design on the pavement of this prestigious development freed up funds for truly stunning natural stone surfacing, resulting in a visually impressive and functional entrance to Royal Arsenal Riverside.
