Design and Engineering Case Studies
Design and Engineering Case Studies
In our collection of case studies below, we shine a light on the design and engineering story behind a project, exploring our full range of design services from complex 3D modelling of one-off bespoke features to driving through efficiencies in pavement design.
Our case study portfolio covers a wide range of projects and scapes, each with their own unique challenge. Each design solution is deliberately focused on reducing risk and complexity in the build and delivering overall savings in time, cost and carbon.

Battersea Power Station
A project where budget pressures posed a real threat to the scope and quality of the external works package. The clients design team were under pressure to significantly reduce the material quality and overall costs.
Cost savings: £186,000 in build costs across Phase 1 works
Carbon savings: 76 tonnes (18%) saving
Goldman Sachs planters
The design of a complex interlocking and overlapping granite retaining wall that includes seven planters, positioned over split levels and surrounded within 3,500m2 of public realm. The added restrictions of limited excavation depth within central London posed a considerable challenge to foundation design and buildability.
Bedford Town Centre
Although the client was satisfied with prospective designs for this crucial redevelopment, planners were eager to engage Marshalls to review outline paving proposals and give guidance on potential improvements.
Cost savings: Over £120,000 in reduced subbase material
Carbon savings: 33% reduction in high traffic areas
Time savings: 33% reduction in on-site labour time
King Street, Westminster
In a response to a growing climate challenge, Westminster City Council wanted to examine if its public highways works could be carried out in a more carbon efficient manner both in terms of their design, construction and on site operations.
- 79% saving in operational delivery against a typical Westminster Council project (0.0005 tonnes per day)
- 46% saving per m2 of materials used in footway construction by reducing paving depth, foundation build up and material specification
- 4kg/m2 saving by reducing paving slab thickness
- 76% saving on travel (0.01 tonnes per day)
- 60% saving per m2 in deliveries (0.03 tonnes per day)
