What are speed bumps?

Speed bumps is an overarching term used to describe speed cushions and speed ramps. 

These products are specially designed raised sections of roads that aim to slow vehicles down and calm traffic. Speed bumps are typically found in areas where speed control is imperative, like residential areas, car parks and pedestrian crossings. 

What's the difference between a speed cushion and a speed ramp?

Speed cushions and ramps are both traffic calming devices but work differently.

Speed cushions are raised sections of road with gaps that match the wheelbase of cars, slowing them down while allowing wider vehicles like ambulances and buses to pass with less delay. They are commonly found on roads with mixed traffic.

In contrast, speed ramps are continuously raised platforms across the carriageway, forcing all vehicles to slow down. Speed ramps are typically found at pedestrian crossings, car parks, and private roads where reducing the speed of all vehicles is necessary.
