Project
Volker Fitzpatrick (VFL) was tasked with constructing a permeable car park at Corby’s new Logistics Centre. Initially, VFL specified a competitor’s permeable block paving system using a British Standard sub-base design. However, they sought to optimise the project and reduce costs.
Solution
Marshall Design and Engineering Services stepped in to help VFL redesign the sub-base and proposed a shallower sub-base design that could still provide sufficient structural and hydraulic performance, thanks to the enhanced interlock offered by Marshalls Priora blocks. This rationalised design was covered by the Marshalls design warranty, in addition to the standard manufacturer’s guarantee. The new design required less excavation, disposal, and infill, resulting in significant savings in material, time, and carbon.
Outcome
The redesign saved over £60,000 on the total cost of the job. Rob McArdle, Buyer at Volker Fitzpatrick, noted:
"We achieved significant savings using the shallower Marshalls pavement design. There’s no doubt that this, coupled with the support we’ve had from the Marshalls team, helped us to tender a keener price and win the job."
