At Marshalls, we take our standards seriously, which is why we have a central lab in Halifax that goes above and beyond in testing all our products, including over 700 Mortar and Screed samples annually. We also have technical experts who collaborate with teams to innovate and maintain product quality across our range, from Aggregates to Solar Panels.

Kyle Adamson recently celebrated his 10-year anniversary, starting as a lab technician in Halifax and rising to become Head of Technical for the group in 2022. His career growth was supported by Marshalls, allowing him to progress through various technical roles. Now, with his new position, Kyle needed additional support to meet the day-to-day technical requirements for our Mortars and Screeds products.

With his new role in full swing, it was time to hire support to help Kyle reach his goals; he needed assistance with the day-to-day technical requirements for our Mortars & Screeds products. Kyle told us:

“It’s a step forward for our technical team. Niall has shown already within the business his potential, and to have “poached” him into the technical team is a real positive”.

Niall Horner joined the business in 2019 as a driver, delivering Mortars and Screeds across Yorkshire. He originally joined, looking to have more regular hours and to add a different vehicle to his CV. Whilst being a driver, he took an interest in our batching process, which opened an opportunity to become a relief driver/batcher in early 2021. As he found his feet, he knew he would take a full-time role as a batcher at our Leeds plant, quickly progressing to Plant Manager in late 2021. This breadth of experience across the different roles in Mortars and Screeds made him the obvious choice for our National Mortars and Screeds technologist role.

Why do you love working for Marshalls?

Kyle: "The opportunity to push yourself in a high-paced, hard-working environment is a real driver for me personally. I enjoy the varied challenges of the day-to-day and problem-solving when things start to go wrong.

Working for Marshalls also allows me to keep progressing in my studies. I am currently completing a business apprenticeship degree at Manchester Met. Prior to that, I completed my level 3 and 4 apprenticeships, as well as a concrete technology and project management course. The business has always been brilliant in providing me opportunities to learn and progress and I couldn’t be more grateful".

Niall: "I love the fast-paced environment and the support from the different areas within the business to succeed. There are always opportunities to progress within Marshalls".

What advice would you give someone joining Marshalls?

Kyle: "Embrace the challenge. Marshalls has a clear history of helping people improve if they are willing to put in the work. It is not always easy, but it's worth it".

Niall: "Take advice from everyone in the business, across all departments. We have some great people at Marshalls with vast knowledge and experience across many different sectors".

What advice would you give to someone joining the sector?

Kyle: "It’s no secret that the housing sector has had a few tough years after the COVID boom. But we are now starting to see how important house building and infrastructure are to the recovery of the UK economy. The sector will grow and thrive once again over the next few years, and it will be exciting to be part of it".

Niall: "There is so much more than first meets the eye to embrace all the different aspects of the sector".
