Marshalls Group Marketing Director, Chris Harrop, Chaired yesterday’s Business in the Community (BITC) Business Unusual Conference.

The BITC is a British business-community outreach charity promoting responsible business, CSR and corporate responsibility.

This year’s conference focused on the subject of Sustainable Innovation and showcased current examples of how companies are using true innovation to make positive and sustainable changes in their business. These ranged from innovation in their business model and product development, through to innovation through the supply chain and in how businesses collaborate for mutual advantage.

Speakers on the day included representatives from M&S, Yorkshire Water, Mud Jeans, Tesla, 3M and Unilever.

Chris Harrop has helped transform Marshalls into a leading sustainable business, winning numerous awards for commitment to the environment and supply chain ethics, including BITC, Business in the Community Awards for Excellence.

In recognition of his achievements, Chris was rated 5th in Ethical Corporation’s Heroes of Sustainability in 2007 and in 2012 was named a Business Game Changer by BITC.

Chris is Chairman of the United Nations Global Compact UK Network, and is also a Non Executive Director at the Ethical Trade Initiative.

Chris opened the event with insights into Global Macro trends, Sustainable Development Goals and the need for organisations to Innovate or Perish and to make sustainability a core part of their business model.
