Marshalls Civils and Drainage’s precast concrete drainage pipes and perfect manhole system are being installed by G A Prydden on behalf of Wilmott Dixon at two new schools on the site of a former detention centre for children at Dyson Hall, Fazakerley, Liverpool.

The £5 million project will provide a special school with a 25-metre hydrotherapy pool run by the Birtenshaw Charity, who will provide education and care for up to 40 physically disabled children, some with complex health needs, learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum conditions.

The organisation currently has an oversubscribed school in Bolton and is keen to expand into Liverpool to cater for the demand for children from the area, creating at least 100 local jobs in the process. It is envisaged that construction costs would be repaid to the council through the rental agreement for the building. In addition, the New Heights School is relocating from Gateacre to a new £3.5m building on the site.

New Heights is a pupil referral unit that educates children excluded from mainstream education. It caters for up to 66 young people, with staff carrying out assessments before referring pupils to an appropriate secondary, special or studio school.

Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration at Liverpool City Council, said: “This will deliver a number of benefits for young people from Liverpool with significant needs. Dyson Hall is a building that we no longer have a use for, and the two new modern facilities will bring a derelict site back into use.”

Construction began in late 2016 with both schools due to open in September 2017.
