Marshalls has been working closely with a pioneering school in Lytham St. Annes to help it achieve its ambitious plans to become the most sustainable school in the UK and the school has recently announced that it has won the prestigious ‘Outstanding Sustainable Schools Award 2010’ sponsored by WRAP run by the Times Educational Supplement (TES).
St. Bedes Catholic High School took on an ambitious plan to become a flagship and case study for education and sustainability, this included redevelopment of the outside areas of school and has been led by an inspirational Head Teacher, Phil Grice.
The whole school embarked on a series of ‘green’ initiatives including green fashion shows, building new allotments and ensuring the school ran energy efficiency exercises, with everyone recycling. By engaging the children in this project, St. Bedes became the only school in the country to be selected as a finalist for the £1 Million Nesta ‘Big Green Challenge’ and can add the TES award to its trophy cabinet.
As part of this initiative, the school looked at redeveloping the areas around the school with sustainable materials which would inspire social interaction and instil a greater sense of pride amongst the children. Phil Grice brought in Marshalls to discuss his ideas to transform the outside landscape with paving, street furniture and water management which would suit the sustainable ethos of school.
Phil Grice, Head Teacher at St. Bedes says: “We chose Marshalls as they have a real commitment to ethical trading, to social responsibility, but also to reducing carbon dioxide emission in their products. It is also the quality and sustainability of Marshalls’ products that impressed us. So much of the emissions associated with a school are to do with procurement, so we have chosen to buy long-lasting and serviceable products which, over time, will result in a lower carbon footprint.”
Phil added “we are delighted to achieve the Outstanding Sustainable Schools Award 2010 and it is the hard work and commitment of the entire school and partnership working with organisations such as Marshalls that has ensured our dreams of creating a sustainable school have been realised, many thanks to all involved in the project.”
Marshalls is leading its industry in providing sustainable and ethical solutions to transform landscapes across the country and was the first company in the world to carbon label an entire product range. Its work in ensuring no child labour is used in the sourcing of its products and improving the lives of quarry workers has won many awards. It was these credentials that led Phil Grice to use Marshalls to design and install benches, drainage and paving inlaid with inspiring inscriptions.
