The Marshalls ‘Family Garden’ at this year’s Holker Garden Festival is a celebration of children, families and the work being undertaken by Marshalls and UNICEF UK to eliminate child labour from the quarrying sector in India and the furthering of children’s rights in Vietnam and China.
The garden is split into four individual areas, all of which are designed to provide space for play, rest and spending time outdoors as a family.
Natural stone provides smooth, cool, contemporary areas for family relaxation with planting to soothe the senses, whilst Marshalls rubberised PlayPave paving in bold bright colours creates a safe play area surrounded by edible plants and herbs where children can take an active part in gardening. Pathways in various product types will provide sensory interest with different textures.
The Family Garden is a reflection of Marshalls support for children across the world. All of the hard landscaping elements are from the Fairstone range of ethically sourced natural stone meaning that no child labour was used in the production. In early 2014, Marshalls announced a three year partnership with UNICEF UK aimed at tackling child labour in the Indian quarrying sector, so for every 1m2 of Marshalls Fairstone products sold during the partnership £1 will be donated to the charity to fund its vital work.
Gemma Jones from Marshalls said: “We’re extremely proud and excited to be involved in this year’s Holker Garden Festival with our first ever Marshalls designed and built show garden. The Family Garden is a celebration of family life with spaces for play, rest and spending time together. As a business, creating family friendly spaces is something we know a lot about as we’ve been helping people to create them for decades.
“The garden is also a celebration of Marshalls three year partnership with UNICEF UK which aims to tackle the issue of child labour in the Indian quarrying sector, and features Marshalls ethically sourced Fairstone paving.”
The garden also includes a stunning Indian sandstone sculpture by celebrated artist Michael Disley. This sculpture of a child entitled ‘The Flower Girl’ will be auctioned off after the show to raise funds for UNICEF’s vital work via the Marshalls eBay shop.
