Measuring to find out how many block pavers you need
Step 1
Firstly, draw a rough sketch of the area you want to block pave. Remember, it doesn't need to be perfect; it should just be a simple drawing where you will note the length and width of the area you intend to pave. These measurements will inform you of how many pavers you need to lay.
Step 2
Next, mark out the area you will be working in with string. Push the pegs into the ground at intervals across the width and length of the location and secure the string to them, ensuring that the string doesn't sag.
Step 3
Grab your tape measure and use it to measure the width and length of the space, ensuring you make a note of them on the sketch.
Step 4
As block paving is purchased by area and not block, calculating how much you need is a relatively easy task.
If the area you’re measuring is a regular shape (like a square or rectangle), simply multiply the width of the space by the length.
However, to calculate the area of an L-shape or irregular-shaped patio, you’ll need to break it down a bit more.
An easy way to do this is by sectioning your outdoor space into separate rectangles. Then, calculate the square metres of each rectangle by multiplying the width by the length. Add the amounts for each rectangle together, and this will give you the total size of the patio in square metres.
We would also recommend that you factor in wastage by adding 10% to your final calculation.
