If Chelsea is the grand old dame of the traditional flower show season, then the latest addition to the summer calendar looks set to usher in a wind of change.
The RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, taking place for the first time this year, is poised to break boundaries as it blends tradition with unexpected, innovative design.
Given Chatsworth’s rich history of design revolutionaries, it’s the perfect setting for a show that will look to celebrate the unconventional and daring.
After all, this is where the world’s most famous landscape gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, changed the face of 18th century England, sweeping away formal gardens and diverting the course of the River Derwent to create the great landscape park visitors can still see today.
Just under a century later, the grounds of the stately home in Derbyshire were transformed once again through a partnership between the Sixth Duke of Devonshire and his visionary gardener, Sir Joseph Paxton. Together they created the Great Conservatory, the largest glass building in England when it was constructed in 1840 as a home for vibrant flowers, exotic palms and aquatic plants.
Chatsworth will harness modern inflatable technology to recreate this thrilling masterpiece. A giant 14-metre high dome will form the centrepiece of the show’s Floral Marquee, drawing inspiration from the shape of Paxton’s now long-lost glass house.
Elizabeth Patterson, Deputy Show Manager, said: “The overarching theme for the show is Design Revolutionaries. Chatsworth has such a rich history and through the ages it has attracted revolutionary thinkers who have made their mark on its landscape.”
If Chatsworth is the perfect choice for an event that showcases new thinking in outdoor design then Marshalls, which has innovation built into its very DNA, is the ideal fit for a show that celebrates those who are constantly looking to push boundaries.
